Maarten Spruyt – Chapter 3HREE
We enjoyed working on the light design of the exhibition Chapter 3HREE in Het HEM. Curator Maarten Spruyt shows works by 27 artists. The human desire to get closer to nature was the starting point of his selection. How do we find stability on a planet that changes irreversibly through the influence of our behaviour?
“What is important now is to recover our senses” Susan Sontag
Most of the exhibition takes place in a 200 meter long underground shooting range in the basement of Het HEM. The very diverse artworks all have a link with nature, how we deal with it or deny it. The visitor walks alone through the exhibition. You have to make a personal journey through the underground tunnel.

“We must learn to see more, to hear more, to feel more”
Maarten Spruyt: “We are living in a changing time in which we have to reposition ourselves with respect to each other and nature and politics and art. The beauty of that tunnel is that you have few directions. You have to go through that tunnel. ”
Light on location
Lighting this exhibition was a challenge. There was nothing in the underground shooting range. By clamping autopoll poles in the tunnel, vertically or horizontally, we were able to install small rails with fixtures. The light has been kept white and the contrasts between the illuminated artworks and the empty spaces are large. All artworks have their own light atmosphere. The walk through the tunnel is theatrical and sober. Partly by the environment and partly by the power of the beautiful artworks. You can immerse yourself in this other world.
Due to corona measures exhibition and museum are closed until 1 June 2020. The exhibition will be extended until 1 August 2020.
