The installation ‘Obedience’ by Saskia Boddeke and Peter Greenaway in opened May 21st 2015 in the Jewish Museum in Berlin. This installation in 15 rooms, tells the story of the sacrifice of Isaak.
The Myth in which Abraham is told to sacrifice his own son as an ultimate proof of faith, exists not only in Christianity, but also in Judaism and – in a slightly altered form – in Islam. Boddeke and Greenaway show the similarities and the differences. They make the story both personal and contemporary.
In some of the rooms the light follows the projections in a subtle way, in others it defines the atmosphere or directs the attention of the visitor to one of the hundred year old books and manuscripts. Sometimes the light acts as a theatrical element, in other rooms we tried to approach the space as a whole.
