Benno Barends created the lighting design for Awake. The light display starts during the day. Gradually it’s getting deep into the night. It is so dark that the audience has to try very hard to see. Suddenly the bathroom light comes on and the audience pops to the back into they’re seats due to the huge blast of light coming on.

Theater DEGASTEN

Theater DEGASTEN battles surrender versus control. The physical performance AWAKE takes place between brooding and dreaming, sleeping and waking.

The world is in your bed 24/7. When sleep just won’t come and the bleeps on your smartphone continue, the temptation is to connect online via WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook.

You spend your life learning to control and manage everything down to even your carefully constructed image on social media. While no one ever taught you how to surrender yourself. How do you surrender?
